Smart Sticks For The Blind
Here at Make Today Matter, we see the value in everyone. This project helps blind and visually impaired students In India get the quality smart sticks they need. These smart sticks have advanced sensors which help the blind travel to destinations without a guardian. Each stick cost $28. MTM will match each donation! Donate now and help these students!
On January 30th, 2023 due to your generous support, we were able to deliver and provide the first 100 walking sticks with smart sensor to the visually impaired students, teachers, and aged inmates of the Government Higher Secondary School for visually impaired at Poonamallee, Chennai. School Principal Mr. Arularasan said, “it is highly useful for their day to day activities and also reach their destination without any hindrance”. School principal, teachers, and students express gratitude to all the donors and the well wishers for their wonderful support. We provided basic training on how to use the smart sticks when it was delivered. We are planning to provide more training on how to use the sensor device. They are very happy with all the support. The feedback we received were very positive and they are starting to adopt to their new day to day life based on this new device. A 11th Grader student after using the smart stick said, “I am able to grow stronger and be more self-confident and less dependent on others.” They are happy about the long lasting rechargeable battery, foldable 4ft aluminum stick, with visually impaired friendly design which vibrates from low to high when getting closer to the object which makes them less prone to the injury. They were able to change setting to 3 different ranges - 2 feet for indoor, 4 ft to outdoors and up to 8 ft for open areas.
The School is looking for more smart sticks for the remaining students. We are working on the next set of smart sticks to be delivered and will keep you updated on the status. We are trying to get smaller stick (less than 4 ft) for the primary, and middle school students. Thank you so much for helping us reach out to those in need. Please forward the GoFundMe link to others so we can reach out goal of $3,720. Pictures of the students receiving the smart sticks on January 30th, 2023 are below!
